Emergency Management

Emergency Management & Radiation Readiness

Radiation emergencies require coordination from multiple sectors including emergency management. Emergency management is involved in planning, coordinating, and responding to radiation emergencies. Emergency management coordinates with first responders in the short-term and supports recovery efforts in the long-term. Emergency management may be involved in incident management teams, distribution centers, and community reception centers. They may conduct air sampling, create messages, or plan for sheltering and exercising.

Partnership with emergency management for radiation emergencies is critical to a coordinated approach. Emergency management interfaces with radiation control programs during a radiological emergency. Organizations like the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD), the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN), and the Health Physics Society help emergency management professionals connect with experts in radiation control at the state and local level.
