U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

As part of its mission to protect human health and the environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prepares for and responds to radiological emergencies. EPA’s mission includes supporting federal, state, local, tribal and territorial partners by monitoring radiation levels via the RadNet system; collecting and analyzing environmental samples; assessing dose and risk; communicating radiation information and safety messages to the public; and providing decontamination and cleanup expertise and assistance.

EPA publishes the Protective Action Guides Manual, which contains radiation dose guidelines that would trigger public safety measures, such as evacuation or staying indoors, to minimize or prevent radiation exposure during an emergency.
